had a quote from volvo agents in lymington for a new waterpump at £332.52 !! are they titanium? is there an aftermarket replacement type ? i need 2 ! how do they justify this ridiculous price? there are thousands of these engines around ,someone must have come up with a competitive priced alternative ?

Pump manufacturer for sure not Volvo; unless You experienced a major machanical failure, simple parts are subject to maintenace: 1 oil rubber ring, 1 water rubber ring, impeller, small top screw. If really unforunate, stainless steel axis could be ruined by use without lubrication.

Re: Try JabscoShop...

Very easy to repair, bearings & seals are standard from any bearing distributor, other parts from Jabsco shop. I replaced the bearings and seals for under £15 a few years back.

had the same scenario when i needed a new cylinder head for an md3b , qouted astronomical price, when i asked why so expensive, answer was "they have them, and you want one,so you pay", i dont have a volvo anymore, i wonder why

Re: Try JabscoShop...

The seal for a water pump needs to have a copper spring so standard one, which is steel, will not do, wll rust quickly.

Get one from Cleghorn or buy a standard seal and change the spring from the old seal if it is still intact.

Re: Try JabscoShop...

I don't know that engine in detail as I have a perkins and a BMC. I assumed that it was the raw water pump and not the fresh water pump like in a car engine. It is normally the raw water pump that gives problems. If the engine is only direct water cooled i.e. no heat exchanger and the sea water does around the engine block there will not be a fresh water pump. On most engines the fresh water pump will most likely be from some car/truck based engine. I know some Volvo engines are in effect perkins as Ford ome both Volvo and perkins

\"i wonder why\"

Such an ill thought answer by the person who told you that. Clearly you failed to appreciate the real reason behind the issue, so, this is why.

Imagine that you were making an engine in 1974 and as a goodwill gesture you decided to put a few extra cylinder heads on a shelf for the benefit of future customers. You would be quite justified in charging interest on the capital employed, a storage charge and a profit on the final sale. In fact a fool if you didn't!

I'm sure someone better qualified than me can tell you what compound interest has been over that period, and the cost per sq. ft. of good, secure dry storage, but I would bet that to take the 1974 price, multiply by 10 (just to keep pace) then add a profit margin wouldn't be far out.

I bet the old, simple cylinder head kept for posterity worked out more expensive per cylinder than one for this years wizz-bang hi-tech engine too.

Then again we have been through periods of rampant price and earnings inflation, rampant interest rates, and rampant property inflation. With the benefit of hindsight I bet Volvo wouldn't have bothered if they knew the customers were just going to be whinging, ungrateful (insert own word here).

Anyway, that's why.

Bronze. At least a fivers worth.
Volvo don't make raw water pumps. My MD2030 is an oem variation on a Jabsco pump but with a modified casting so that you can't get the whole lot from Jabsco direct. Clever eh!

What really winds me up is that Volvo can't even be bothered to spray it green. The paint is extra.
