Volvo Penta MD17C cracking noise

I have been on the ICW for the last three days moving from Myrtle Beach South Carolina to Palm Coast Florida and everything was going well until today the Gear shift had a slight delay when engaging this morning and the Motor overheated oil light coming on after approximately three hours of wor.I am no mechanic but I have the aptitude To make repairs when I know that the Issue I have a video with The noise that I’m describing but iPad will not let me attach, I think it may be that it may be the gear box.

You describe two problems 1. slight delay on engaging gear shift and 2. overheating after three hours.
Does the gear shift delay occur in all shift directions or just one?
Does the engine over heat in neutral?
Is the engine raw water Cooper or does it have a heat exchanger?
