I have a Volvo Penta MD1 but have only been able to locate an instruction book for a MD1B. What are the significant differences?
Let me google that for you........

Ooooh, aaaagh - all hail the power of google.

Workshop manual (Paper copy) available http://www.volvopenta.com/volvopent...lication_search/Pages/publication_search.aspx for the princely sum of 300SEK (29euro) though I am sure someone on here had a pdf copy.

Significantly different I think you will find

There is a manual for D1, MD1 D2 and MD2 on Boatinfo

http://boatinfo.no/lib/volvo/manuals/md1-d1-md2-d2.html#/0

There is also a scanned or photographed copy of the manual somewhere amongst Dylan Winters stuff: http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/blogs/volvo-md1-manual/

( Owners manual for MD2B, as you have probably found, on the VP website and a workshop manual on Bluemoment )

IIRC The md1b is 10hp and the md1 is 7hp other than that there is no difference I think. But then it was a long time ago and maybe my memory is not what it was!

Thanks Vic and Gavin, most useful. Cliff, I asked about MD1 not MD1B. One difference I know about is the MD1 does not have an oil filter.

The MD1 preceeded the MD1B and is very similar but lower power and smaller bore. Only 4 head studs where MD1b has 4 studs +2 bolts. The MD1 has an internal crankcase breathing system where the crankcase vapours pass up the pushrod / tappet space to a port where they are drawn directly to the inlet valve together with the inlet air. This can create a situation on worn engines where the upward flow of crankcase air prevents oil draining downwards and results in the engine strangling itself and emitting dense clouds of smoke and oil exhaust. :) A short term fix is to fit external breathing till the engine can be serviced. Last time I saw this fix done the engine worked fine for another 4/5 years after receiving a dockside cylinder hone.

I believe some MD1 gearboxes share the engine oil so the oil might not appear pristine clean!

There are several changes from 1 to 1B
Oil water fuel and exhaust systems are modified along with crank case block and head
But they do look very similar although the oil filter is the definite give away
