Can anyone tell me how long it takes to fit a sea water pump impeller on a 4.3 engine.
The last two years i have had this item fitted by a well known south coast Volvo dealer as the engine drive is under warranty.
If the impeller takes under an hour to fit why am I being charged £72 + vat
I have asked the dealer to call me regarding the cost and I'm still waiting.

Seems perfectly fair to me, half an hours labour c. £25, Impeller c. £35 equals about £72 and of course the VAT.

I'd be grateful that you got a bill that has only two digits, I've been used to high threes and even fours.

Your impellor.

To Shetland. I know it is not an answer to your question and you are under warrenty but I am trying to help you on this but do not understand your post as you do not explain why you need a replacement impellor. It reads as if you have had a replacement twice in the last two years. If so something is very wrong somewhere. Is it like a Japsco impellor? If it's any help I contacted Japso about life of these and got the reply "if properly fitted/used they will last for 6,000.(six thousand)hours". I calculated that made 40 years of my usage! Chris.

It's a Volvo recommendation, and as the engine is under warranty I have to follow the rules.

The impeller replacement on an engine that has the pump on the engine itself (as opposed to inside the sterndrive), really is not a big job.

Different engine, same procedure:

If transport, making room for access or other timeconsuming tasks are involved, the price will raise accordingly.

If you use volvo dealers expect to pay dealer prices, I'd say you got off light at that labour figure, most dealers are around the £60.00 per hour.

As for the parts fitted I'd be thinking about protecting your investment, that's not really a lot of money compared to owning say for example a pair of d4s.

I replace my impeller on my v/p 4.3 engine every year takes about 20 mins to replace, this year the impeller i ordered from Italy as a different manufacturer and to be truthful better quality than V/P, had no issue yet and cost me 25 quid all in.

Do it yourself and save some money, the pics shows my water pump and the impeller is situated behind the front cover.

It may only take 20 mins to replace when on the boat but bear in mind the engineer has to get keys from marina office, go to boat, move all owners gear to get floors up, change impeller and check pump for wear, clean out salt water from bilge, replace floors and owners gear as found, return keys, not unreasonable to charge an hours labour.

I am happy to pay an hours labour for the work, but I don't believe that the company that carried out the work have a £72.00 an hour labour charge.
There was also a £6.00 sundry charge.
I have not paid the invoice yet as I am still waiting for an explanation from the dealer.

well I for one would like to see 6000 hrs. never managed 1000hrs with coastal and inland foreign usage. Johnson impellers last longer, inmo, as can get past 1600 hrs on the onan genny.

4.3 engine is a bit vague; OK, for sure a V6, but how old? Various pumps have been fitted to the V6 ( and V8). the ease of changing the impeller depends on age of the engine and installation ( earlier more difficult , later much easier).

If it's the later type, throw away the original 4 slot head bolts and replace them with M5 "allen" (cap) head bolts; much easier !

I now have a 2004 V8 engine, with the access issues due to a horizontal heat exchanger mounted above the water pump, it takes at least 30 minutes to change the impeller.

Your not serious.

Buggered if would risk damaging a £20K engine for the same money as 15 gallons of petrol, change that impellor every 12 months.

You only need to change the impeller every year if the incorrect material has been used.

If Volvo have supplied a nitrile impeller last year then it could well be knackered after 9 months. Demand to know exactly what has been supplied this year.

If Volvo supply a neoprene impeller then every 2 years is perfectly adequate.

Volvo and mercruiser do seem to prefer to supply nitrile because it costs more but it isnt at all suitable, nitrile is for pumping diesel fuel or oily bilge water not designed for sea water.
