Hi all,
I have a 1989 Sadler 34 with a Volvo Penta 2003 engine. Recently I was purchasing some filters for the engine and didn't want to pay the exorbitant prices from Volvo Penta. I manage to get the primary fuel filter from Halfords for €5. For the secondary fuel filter and the oil filter I went online to my local chandler. The secondary filter has a part number of 829913 and the oil filter has a part number of 834337. Please see the photo attached of what I received.

The filter on the left is a genuine Volvo Penta oil filter part number of 834337. This is the same size of the filter that is on it and looks fine.

The filter in the middle has a part number of 829913 and is marked as a fuel filter. It is exactly the same size and looks similar to the oil filter part number 834337.

The filter on the right has a part number 834337 and is marked as an oil filter. It is twice the size of any oil filter I have ever fitted to my Volvo and seems to be the same size as the secondary fuel filter part number 829913.

I contacted the chandler and asked them the differences and their response was that filter sizes change all the time and that the part numbers were correct.

My question is whether these filters seem to have been marked incorrectly and the oil and diesel filters are interchangable as long as the threads and seals fit onto the engine.

I have found pattern parts are almost always different dimensions to the originals. I doubt they have been marked wrong, 1 filter marked wrong maybe but 2 would be unlikely. Fuel filters and oil filters are not interchangeable. I have had to send pattern filters back before because there size meant they wouldn't fit in the space in the engine room. I would google the part numbers and manufacturer if its printed anywhere on the filter and see what you can find out.

I've always used pattern filters with no issues. Only the secondary fuel filter varies, some are a bit longer with a bleed nipple on, some do not have this unnecessary addition (Volvo 2001 so similar or same as OPs 2003 I believe).

That reminds me I must get some diesel bug fuel treatment, prevention being better than cure in this case.

Hi David,
In anticipation of more sage advice coming along shortly, my contribution would be that while the threads and dimensions of the middle and left-hand ones may be similar, the actual filter matrixs (matrices?) within may differ. There may be some info on the sides.
For what it's worth, when I last changed my oil filter (on a VP D1-20), I was dismayed to find that the one I removed was of smaller diameter than the spares I had on board. Reasoning that there must have been a reason that the motor factor's had given me those particular ones, referenced against the part numbers I knew to be correct, I offered one up, and sure enough it fitted, as the flange, to which it screwed on, was of much wider diameter than the one I removed.

I've been using filters from inline filters.co.uk for some years now on my 2030. They're labelled Baldwin and the fuel and oil filters are both identical in terms of thread and size: looking at them I think that there are differences between the filters in terms of the gubbins inside them. Both filters are different sizes from the original VP parts, being somewhat slimmer IIRC. Even when I had money to burn and bought VP parts, the external sizes varied between purchases, so I'd not worry.
