Just had the wounding news that my EVC PCU is shot on my 5.0 gxie m engine ? with a replacement being £1700plus vat plus programming, plus fitting, plus diagnostics to date.... Totaling £2800???

Costal rides are hopeful they may have a used one for me (they are getting back to me tomorrow) anyone have any other options for me? Or maybe one lying around they would sell?

Part number on mine is 3849496
P/n S101308/R18 or it could be R1B hard to make out?

Thanks

Looks like I will have to give that a try as coastalrides have just got back to say they don't have a used one in stock. Thanks phil

Hi Graham, thanks for that, I have just called them and it is something they could possibly do ? I will have to go and collect it from the dealer and get it sent away, thanks again phil

Simonfraser the PCU appears to have blown... Literally, the plastic casing and silicone has been forced apart by heat presumably and when they came to diagnose it it was very hot.

Coastal Rides did help a chum of mine to sort a problem with a ECU on Phantom 46 after just about everybody else and their mother had a go and at a half sensible price.

Hopefully the PCU is repairable by the company Graham suggested, coastalrides have been very helpful and if not repairable fingers crossed one comes into costalrides very soon as a new one isn't realistically a option on such an old boat?

and perfect example of why those of us that do not have ready access to the sort of money needed to run a small protectorate in the Carribean, avoid the toxic mix of electronics and H2O in a fibreglass moisture container like the plague......:)Then add a little salt into the formula.

What a stupid complication on a simple 5.0 litre V8 petrol engine + outdrive. The V8 and DPS worked perfectly well for decades with manual cables. Convert it back to a manual shift and manual throttle control ( VP even list the parts).

Gets rid of the £500+ shift actuator and it's problems.
Gets rid of the related fail safe " drop you in it when you need it to work" engine/ shift combination

The electronic EVC system is the one thing I hate above all others on my D4 !

Hi Phil, what's your engine serial number?

That PCU hardware number (3849496) should have other hardware numbers that would be compatible with the software, so it doesn't necessarily need to be a 3849496 PCU that you replace it with.

If you can confirm your engine s/n then I'll look up the available numbers and you can widen your search!

Andy

Hi Andy, that would be great thanks, the engine serial number is 4012258691
There is some discussion going on with the volvo penta engineers at the moment as to whether second hand control units are programmable or not, one says they are the other says not?

If you get no luck with sourcing the correct Volvo Penta part, it could be replaced with a programmable aftermarket ECU.

I have a Holley HP EFI https://www.holley.com/products/fuel_systems/fuel_injection/hp_efi/ that I fitted to a Mercruiser V8 to replace the standard multipoint injection when we upgraded the power. It's a relatively straightforward using a standard Holley loom.

I have one of the 4BBL replacement throttle bodies and it's fully programmable and self learning using an O2 sensor to control fuel and ignition mapping.

Let me know if you decide to go that way, I'd be happy to offer any advice.
