I am thinking of buying an EVC display for my twin D4 260 EVC A engines. Volvo Penta price £905 + Vat.
I have found a company who supply Cantrack display units model no 2600/2610 which look identical in appearance to the Volvo unit. The company is Hindle controls, www.controlsandcables.com Virtually half the price. Seems to display same data as Volvo units.
The hindle controls system works on J1939 protocol. The connection pin is a Deutx , 12 pin same as the volvo drawing on my EVC A Paperwork.
The only question that Hindle are coming back on is can the display data for both engines on the single display as the volvo unit can.

Does anyone know the operating system for the Volvo units (software) or has anyone done the same and used a Cantrack system using a J1939 operating system??

Any thoughts appreceiated. Many thanks /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Have you got a Raymarine E120 or E80?

I have had the EVC connected to my E120 network and it is excellent providing all the information that is available on the EVC display but on a pane on the Raymarine and of course both on the flybridge and internal displays.

I am based in Chichester Marina if you want to come and have a look.

amillington, that's a good suggestion becuase it might provide a cheaper and better answer. Do you happen to know exactly the components you have to make all this work? I'm guessing you have the black box that Volvo call the NMEA bridge (which I have, not installed yet, approx £300) plus some cables, and that's it. Do you know if there's anything else needed to make this work? Was it easy/hard to set it all up?

Only asking becuase I have a box of parts and will be installing this soon!

Hi Andrew

Thanks for your reply. At present i only have a Raymarine C80. Maybe worth upgrading to an E80 and going the same route as you. What other equipment would i need to be able to run info from my EVC A generation engines to a E80 Display.

I am in Southampton so not far away.

Many Thanks

Keith

I have connected the D4 to my C120 via the converter and used devicenet cabling and plugs (same as NMEA200 and the Volvo box but cheaper) it is useful but gives nowhere near as much info as the Volvo display can. I’m sure it’s all there on the bus but Raymarine simply haven’t done the software to display it. For instance, though the C & E are generally connected to GPS as a plotter and therefore have SOG info and also will display litres or gallons per hour you’d think it would also have an MPG feature but it does not. The EVC one does but that’s only one example, there are numerous others.

To get all the information you have to have a software upgrade to the engines - this cost £377.83 per engine pre-discount, the NMEA 2000 kit was 237.14 and £100 for additional cables + labour - the whole lot cost me £1272.03 + VAT - a lot cheaper than 2 X EVC displays I had fitted to the Phantom 46.

I get more info than I know what to do with and of course I can totally configure what is displayed on the E120.

Having had both, this is a far better solution.

Thanks Andrew. I have already had the software upgrade (so I now get the extra tacho info too), at massive cost

I have the NMEA bridge box, the £237.14 thing, but just haven't got around to fitting it yet.

David2452, thanks, you reminded me why I bought the volvo EVC display as well as getting the Raymarine kit. It's cos Raymarine software doesn't show instantanous mpg, and that's the single most important bit of data (to me) from all this kit. The volvo gauge does show mpg

The volvo displays come up on Ebay from time to time- I got a new one from the US which cost about £140 inc post and no duty. Make sure you get the correct one though there are different versions for EVC A/B and C. I could let you know the company who supplied mine if you want, they may be able to get another, and are very helpful.

Could you please post the details for the company that supplied you as I am in the Market for a new EVC display.

I have the volvo display with the trip computer, yes its expensive but its very good. If you go down the volvo route you can have it working easy, I cant comment on the other makes.

What I like is the fact I can have my engine gauges, the important ones, on the display, the engine temp and oil pressure of both engines showing in one box and on each of the tacho boxes I have my current ltr per hour usage, this means I can keep an eye on all this during the journey without worry, if there is a problem with an engine I will know instantly, and can make sure my fuel use is at its best. Then I can leave my plotter to do what is supposed to do plot. Its hard enough to look at the pages you have on the plotter without adding more.
