Just heard VP have laid off nearly 1/3 of the engine build staff.

Thats all ive heard, no other problems or figures.

Have Yanmar finally made a big way into the worlds engine marine market or is it just a sign of the times?

well ok, not last week... but yesterday /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

VP build for much more than the marine sector so this might be indication of downturn on those sectors, not marine. Unless its the KAD series (and maybe some others) line that has been slowed down, because these are marine-only engines?

I'd guess that VP are more exposed than the likes of MTU and Cat becuase VP are very concentrated on the smaller boat segment, which is what is suffering in the current market. The market for boats with 800hp+ engines (just outside Volvo's range...) isn't suffering nearly so badly

Some of the D series seem to have a lot of unresolved problems, see the D3 and D6 posts on here recently. Plus Sealine and Fairline who are cutting back in anticipation of a smaller market all used a lot of D series.

Really, it really doesnt matter!! But Twister_Ken beat you to it..

The Vara plant is the facility producing the D4 & D6 for both leisure and commercial, its not a third of their 'engine-build' staff total. You know, the Vara facility could build near 18,000 units a year when at capacity.

So as said, a down-turn in demand for the smaller/mid size craft.
