Volvo penta duo-prop

I would be grateful for peoples thoughts. This is a 1 year old Volvo duo prop [image]http://s673.photobucket.com/albums/w97/TimHo/?page=1@action=tageditmany[/image]

It's the second prop. The first having been replaced by the dealer. Apparently the dealer is having problems with a number of customers and Volvo are reluctant to replace, although I understand 40% "goodwill" contribution has been offered to some having problems by Volvo. Dealer is currently talking to Volvo about my prop and others.

Two year old new boat. I'm not a technical person but this doesn't seem right. Boat used for 50-60 hours last year Poole harbour / South coast. Anodes replaced every six months.

I hope the picture gives enough info. There are lots of these pitting marks. More on the back propeller.

i would start quoting fit for purpose to volvo,i thought they had fixed this problem, quite clearly they have not,this was a big problem when they first came out,regards m m 1.

Occasionally, there seem to be some problems with these new alloy props, and as you say Volvo seem reluctant to admit it under warranty.
Do you keep shore power connected? If so, try disconnecting when not on board.
Keep plugging away at the dealer and Volvo yourself. If its your first set, you might make some progress, though if they are now two years old, it might be a bit harder. Certainly if its the first year, a few people do seem to be getting a replacement set of props, but even then, its months and months of haggling.

Yep , same for me plus steering rams and hoses but work was done quickly and without argument /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif . but we will see what happens after another 10 months /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif .

Is it a D6 installation by any chance? I've heard about lots of problems with these props; my understanding is that there aren't any aftermarket props available for these yet, so all you can do is buy more Volvo props if they won't replace them under warranty.

I had a set of props changed in first year told by agent that It was due to a faulty batch. also had rams and hydrolic pipes changed second year. All but the pipes were covered by Volvo. However only covered after me sending them over 20 e-mails and making numerous calls even to the headquarters in Sweden. I have found that the only way to get a responce from them is by becoming a real pain and lituraly writing to everybody even the office cleaners.

I am about to lift this boat again dont know what to expect but a hang over the platform and a feel around makes me feel the props are OK but rams could be a different story.. They are likley to run out of stock rams and pipes if we all start ordering at the begining of the season?

Make yourself a pain to Volvo. I took them to the small claims court and won (also D6 props). Received all my money back including costs and interest but small claims process at the moment is very slow. Allow 6 months from start to finish. Quote EU law "fit for purpose".

There seems to be something a little strange going on here. The brightly polished new props should go black very soon after immersing in salt water. Volvo say this is part of the corrosion protection system. Mine have, as below.

Yours still seem rather 'bronzy' in colour. I would expect them to be black. Whatever is stopping them going black, may be contributing to the corrosion. No idea what that might be though.

Thanks to everyone for their input. When boat came out of the water they were black with some brown slime on. Slime came off easily, ....cleaned and black removed by Volvo dealer.



My strategy is to be quietly assertive with dealer, then follow up with Volvo, keep on badgering and then small claims if no success.

I will let you know how I get on.
