Hello - I have a Volvo DP 290 C leg that currently won't select gear and needs an overhaul. Can anyone recommend someone that could do this? Has anyone used someone that they would avoide!!

Thanks for your help

I used a so called independent stern drive specialist based in Kent. When I got my Volvo 290 drives back one started slipping after 1.5 hours use. Upon my inspection neither drive contained enough oil to register on the dipsticks. Various excuses were laid at my feet to blame me and proprietor point blank refused to accept responsibility for the s#@t work that he didn’t do properly if at all. His only recompense was for me to take drives back to him at my expense. Obviously this required another lift out, time off work etc etc etc. Ironically one of his excuses that it was my fault was that I didn’t use a qualified Volvo engineer to re-fit the legs. Overall it cost me with lift and holds days off work/ loss of earnings and doing the work my myself travel costs delivering and collecting drives approximately £4,200 (of which £3,000 was the price to overhaul drives)had the job been done properly in the first place.
All trust was lost and I ended getting my boat taken to D.B Marine at Cookham who craned the boat out, removed drives, repaired both drives with the inclusion of clutch cones and shift shoes and Oil as well as couple of other small parts, refitted and lift boat back for just over £2,100. A big thumbs and big recommendation for D.B Marine who carried said work earlier this year.

Independent based in Kent , well what a surprise.

I too once fitted a so called recon unit from a Kent based company for it to do exactly the same.

I'm wrong - its a 280 if that makes any difference

As said, DB Marine (Gil) are very good, did an over haul of my drive earlier this year which included clutch cone etc. Not cheap using DB but good quality service.

Or try Volvopaul who is highly regarded by many on this forum, I have found him very helpful.

Always found DB to be very reasonable on price...
