Last summer I just bought a 1996 Monterey 256 Cruiser.
It originally had a Mercruiser Gas (Petrol) engine and drive. In 2003, it had a new VM Motori MD706MH (230hp) Turbo Diesel engine mated to a Volvo Penta DP 290 Sterndrive.
I am happy with the boat and am still figuring out the systems, engine and drive. One issue. When going from Neutral to Reverse, no matter how gently I shift, the drive goes into gear with a 'boom'. I have checked the shift cable & shifter operation and seems good. Idling speed is also low at around 600 rpm.
What could this be? Would you tear the complete drive out and check everything such as clutches, shims etc? I am hesitant to do this, as apart from the work involved, I am not sure I can tackle it myself.
