Hi Guys,

I have twin Volvo Penta Dp-h outdrives fitted to a D4 engine . The boat is out of the water and one of the hydraulic hoses on the steering ran on the starboard side, has come away from the manifold it’s connected leaking fluid .

I have taken the 2 Allen key screws out of the manifold it’s connected to , but the manifold will not budge. I have seen in previous posts that the manifold is suppose to slip down when the screws are removed .

It looks very corroded, and I want to replace it .

Any suggestions on how to take it out.

Thanks in advance

If you still have the other 3 hoses connected you could try twisting it back and forth with a screwdriver between 2 of the pipes. There is nothing else holding it in other than the corrosion you mentioned.

Hi Spannerman

I have tried to move it , but no budge . The 2 rear hoses came away by hand due to the corrosion.
If I take the front 2 hoses off is it possible to chip away at the manifold until it’s free. Just nervous in case I do any damage

It just sits in a hole with four ports that line up with the hoses, you could try to tap it with a punch near the edge and try to get it to rotate in either direction, never seen this problem before.

Thanks for the help Spannerman

I eventually got it out . It’s fairly corroded.

I am going to attached new hoses and I was wondering to I need to put a sealer on the 4 hose connections that sit into the manifold

You need to fit 4 new O rings which sit between the transom and the round fitting. The hose unions need to be tight as they can leak and you will need a crowsfoot spanner to tighten them once the fitting is in place. I always fit the 4 hoses to the fitting with it in a vice and make sure the angle is right or you will struggle to get the hoses to match up with the cylinders.

Hi Again Guys.

Just an update date on above

Fitted the new hoses and tighten, re fitted both Outdrives and topped up the reservoir with new fluid.
Started both engines and when the I touched the steering the alarm went off to say steering failure .

Went to purge the system and still nothing. The port drive is moving fine. Seems to be no pressure in the system
Code showing Mid 250 Psid 9 Fmi

Would it be air in the system of maybe sea water as the hose broke when the boat was in the water .
Just wondering where to start troubleshooting.
Thanks again

On Volvo DPH double installations there has to be a tiebar so that both drives move parallel. Either its a mechanical tiebar which is a rod externally connecting the drives or a hydraulic tibar which has no physical connection between the drives but they are linked hydraulically. These are a pain to bleed and can only be done sucessfully with the Volvo bleed adapter which only dealers have unless Volvopaul has one. Is the oil in the servo reservoir clear red or is it pinkish, if so seawater had got in when the pipe broke and you need to flush the system as seawater in the oil can seize the shuttle valves inside the transom of each drive.

Thanks Spannerman

There was very little oil in the reservoir as most of it was lost when the hose broke. What was left was red.

As you have suggested faults as soon as you turn the wheel and an MID 250 fault code it suggests an issue with the electronic steering system. What is the FMI number? As that will then be the complete fault code and the explanation & troubleshooting advice can be shared

Given that you’ve likely lost a lot of fluid from the rams and hoses I’d suggest it’s probably just air that needs bleeding out, which in theory is done via a ‘purge mode’ calibration.

I assume your oil reservoir is topped up?

Thanks for the reply . I topped up the reservoir after connecting everything. I have tried the purge mode but it’s doing nothing. I will go down to the boat over the next few days and see can I get the correct fault code
