Volvo Penta DP-E Stern Drive - Name

Re: et invenire difficile est via.

A while ago I looked up the cost of the internals for an outdrive rebuild and if gear set is required it wasn’t the kind of Bill I would want for the sake of saving £50 a year on oil, I would also expect to see proof the correct oil has been used when buying a used boat, if not an offer to cover worst case scenario would be made.

Not sure why you would use them when they cost more than genuine and as far as I can see VP don’t make aluminium anodes which would indicate they are not suitable ?
I keep my boat on fresh water but make trips onto salt water.
Aluminium anodes work well for my use of the boat.

What would you use in Brackish water such as the Norfolk Broads where there are Thousands of boats using Ali

The manual says use magnesium for fresh water, VP don’t make an aluminium anode and I’m not sure how protecting aluminium with aluminium works ? Obviously ok if many do it I would guess.

The aluminium anodes must be a different alloy to the leg. The anodes corrode as intended.
I can assure you they do work.

Bit perplexed by your issues, I have 2x 290 DPE drives same as you and have maintained them myself for the last 15 years, got to be the easiest outdrives out there to work on and so far I have only needed routine maintanence.
Pattern parts from keypart usually and other off sources for anodes sometimes ebay often ok.
I use the Ali anodes for use in fresh water and occasional salt use, they work well.
Only thing I wouldn't skimp on though is the oil, tried a cheap automotove equivalent once and would not reccomend it, it just isn't the same. I'm sure the volvo stuff has saved my drives many times over when water has got in there due to fishing line wrecking the shaft seals.

After 30 years plus in the job you get to know what and not what to buy and where and where not to buy from , for fear of litigation I cannot say where not to buy from.
I buy some non genuine parts that I know will give no trouble , the genuine parts are always fitted where they need to be .
I would not put after market oil in a 6 k outdrive or 12k IPS unit , need I say any more .
People you make your own choice .

Quite right Paul. The guys that I use in Spain takes the same approach, for example he insists on genuine OEM bellows.
