Wonder if someone can on here has an idea on the issue I have with a Volvo Penta D6 gauges.

Its a twin D6-ips setup and all works and runs fine however both sets of engine gauges read the same engine which is the port engine. When turning on the port engine the gauges come to life and show exactly the same information. Turning the starboard engine on no gauges switch on.

The engines do have separate EVC displays and these show different information like engine rpm, temp, oil pressure etc etc so these are working properly and tells me that the engine loom / information is getting to the helm ok. Does this simply mean that some idiot has wired the dash up wrong or is there a setting some where?

Thanks

There should be two Helm Control Units behind the dash, one for each engine. They supply power to each ignition switch which when turned on powers up the instruments and ECU on the engine. Think of them as two totally seperate installations which happen tp reside in the same hull. I would check the wiring as it should have a harness which goes from the HCU to the rev counter then daisy chains to the other instruments on that same engine.

There may be an additional multi-link breakout cable connecting both port and starboard ststems - this provides rpm synchronisation for the two engines but, if present, it may explain where the second bank of instruments are getting their data from. Presumably, the gauges can be set to 'see' either port or starboard data but it may take a Volvo engineer to change it.

Took a quick look behind the dash and I did see 2 multilink bars in there. I'm guessing then that one should be for port engine and other for starboard. It's a bit of a mess with cables going everywhere but I will trace all the gauges cables to see where they go and start from there.

The gauges get their info via the rev counter which is plugged into the X5 socket on the HCU, there should be a yellow identification band around the harness at each end. There will be a Y piece so the it can include a seperate EVC display as you have and will go further and cross connect to the other HCU on a twin installation. If you have the latest type throttle quadrant with all the buttons and lights then the HCU is built into the base.
It maybe worthwhile doing an Auto Configuration again which at the very beginning allows you to select which instruments display Port and Starboard data. I don't know which version of EVC you have as there are several different procedures depending on version. Its on the fold out paper chart that should be with the engine manuals with a flow chart of the procedure, its fairly easy if you just follow the prompts.
