Hello Guys

does anyone know if these engines have an OBD connection like they do on car engines, I have seen a number of apps you can download and interogate car engines etc and wondered if it would work with boat engines ?

No, OBD II is a protocol for road vehicles, Volvo have a 4 pin connector for diagnostics and it will only communicate via the Vodia PDA/PC that VP dealers have. The system is tightly controlled with passwords and dealer access codes as its possible to upgrade the software but this has to be reported back to the Volvo server in Sweden, that way they know exactly what version of software is in every motor they have produced and which are eligible for free upgrades or chargeable upgrades, or had campaign upgrades carried out etc. Also they can keep track of any hardware changes as well. So don't expect to be able to get into the EVC system anytime soon.

Some of the OBD piggy bag tuners offer solutions for this engine so some sort of connector is bound to be there. Claim to gain some 10%.

If you intend to DIY optimze performance be warned that it is not poc to do without compromising some of the properies achived by factory wizards (and don't ask how I know.. )

It doesn't use the Volvo serial port to increase the power of the engine, it does it by adding a gadget in the wiring harness on a sensor to fool the ECU to run the high pressure pump at near to its maximum capacity. Its been discussed before, but the bottom line is you over ride the inbuilt safe limits in the software to get more power, this means two things for sure, your Volvo warranty is immediately void and you are now your own test pilot as you are operating the engine outside of the parameters deemed safe after thousands of hours of R&D by the factory. Removing it if it goes wrong and trying to get a warranty claim passed won't work as the EVC system logs any parameters exceeded and for how long. We had a customer who chip tuned a D3, but it ran hot and when I checked the historical log we could see how long it had run over normal temp, Volvo won't even discuss it, you will get a bill for the diagnosis though.
