Hi guys, I am about to purchase a motor boat with 2 x Volvo penta D6 310

What are the known issues on the d6 310 and how to adresss them
In order to make the unit bulletproof
Can any experienced person give me a list of items that can be changed during routine service etc to avoid any know/potential issues please. I will be forever grateful!! Thanks

The D6 is pretty bullet-proof in it's self. Depending on the age and hours, have coolers pulled for corrosion checking/cleaning. Make sure the end caps are metal, not the stupid plastic ones that warped and dripped onto the starter. Same with the seawater strainers and silly plastic caps, go for the glass ones. The shift actuators are known to fail and the alternator and belt tentioners wear out too often. These are not cheap to replace. Check the salt water pump as well.

Yet again, we come to the Volvo electronics. What a PITA, earlier EVC was pretty poor but they got better with age. Get your dealer to check the engines with a VODIA unit for any fault codes and a system check.

Then we come to the DPH drives, if your motors' have them. They must have their own chapter of misery here on YBW over the years. Google them.

The 310 was not over stretched like the higher output models, but all this depends on hours and maintenance practices on the boat. Same as any other diesel.

Get a good Volvo trained mechanic to check them over before purchase. Volvo Paul of this parish is worth talking to.

If you get the engine Serial numbers you can go to a VP dealer and they can check on the Volvo server what warranty repairs have been done, and if any software Upgrades have been, or need doing.

Thank you very much fishtigua, the boat is in Mallorca and trained Volvo mechanics should be available although thanks for pointing out Paul. I will DM him. I’ve seen many threads about the plastic caps but took all your other points carefully on board. Thanks again

Thanks Petem, I did this, I’m trying to get more personal advice on this furum so there is no nasty surprises after the purchase. Thanks again

@spannerman, thanks a lot. I have a second viewing next week so I will take the serial number of both engines, I googled where to find them. In case the dealer will not release them which usually is not a good sign.
