Hi Guys

I have twin Volvo Penta D4 engines. The port one was difficult to start today. I took the boat for a run and the port one would not go above1700 revs and there was a load of black smoke. The starboard would go a little higher. An EVC warning came on saying battery voltage..

the voltage on the display on the port engine’ showed 13.5 when starting and when you rev the engine it would drop to 12.5

would this mean that I have a battery problem or alternator problem or something else.

any advise would be appreciated

You think the voltage is related to the black smoke ? Did they coincide? Usually black smoke means not enough air or too much fuel for the air present. Also usually means new turbo time. I wouldn’t run that engine until the turbo is looked at. I will also say that I don’t know these engines. The boost control may be electronically controlled and suffered the low voltage. But that’s the usual fundamentals of it above.

Thanks for your reply QBhoy,

The only reason I’m mentioning the battery etc is that the EVC is bringing it up as the fault. I am not sure they are related. It seems that both engines seem to be going into a sort of limp mode.
