I'm currently sourcing a new prop. The current one is left handed.

I am being told by the 'experts' that it should be a right handed prop! Even though looking stern onto the engine the shaft turns anti clockwise.

Does anyone know the proper rotation for a one year old Volvo Penta D1-20 (I couldn't find it in the spec sheet). Or can rotation be changed during the installation for the new engine.

Cheers
Paul

Sorry.... I've found it

Rotational direction, viewed from the front: Clockwise

Stand behind the boat and look ( forwards) at the prop if it turns clockwise when going forwards it is a right hand prop..

If it turns anticlockwise when going forwards it is a left hand prop

The engine turns clockwise when viewed from the front ie non gearbox end

Thanks for your reply... I think maybe I should stick with IT instead of trying to fix boats!

The engine spec said it turns clockwise when facing the front of the engine, so looking from behind the prop it should be turning anticlockwise...

I was sure this is a left handed prop! lol

That prop definitely needs to spin anticlockwise when looked at from the behind the boat so it's left-handed.

Thanks Richard for your confirmation it is left handed.

I've had 'experts' over the last week trying to convince me this is a right handed prop! Something that I thought was so simple, I'm now wondering what they are going to stay about my shaft taper!

Several gearboxes can run happily in either direction
Lots of people skimp on changing props when replacing engines as the old one may be ok
Many reduction gearboxes reverse the rotation
Changing the rotation of the shaft would only take moving the cable attachement at the control
Select from the above which are applicable for your installation

You can compare the handedness of a prop with that of a screw thread

Some gearboxes reverse the direction in forward gear though , the output shaft rotating in the opposite direction to the input, you need to know whether your own gearbox does that or not before you can tell whether
you need a LH or RH prop from the direction in which the engine rotates.

I assume your D1-20 is fitted with an MS10 gearbox, which does not reverse the direction! Therefore, in this case, you are correct The prop turns anticlockwise when view from the stern and , as confirmed by the photo, it is left handed
