Hi all, Happy New Year. When our boat was craned out at Chatham Marina one of the props was damaged, the previous owner kindly removed them and posted them for repair,so as I have never worked on the 2 x AQ270 out drives are the props just a push fit and you tighten the cone or is there some tabs that need locking etc?

I have seen online there is a washer to stop fishing line getting behind the prop, then the prop, then a grooved washer and cone, I did plan on just tightening them up but don't want them to drop off if there is a locking washer I need to bend

Are they actually 270 outdrives ? Just thought I’d clarify things perhaps. With the mention of the AQ270. For example, the AQ usually means a inboard engine mated to an outdrive. So AQ271 for example would be a 5.7 v8 Petrol driving a stern drive, like a 290dp perhaps. An AQ205 would be a 4.3 and stern drive.
A 270 outdrive would be quite an old thing and aged mid 80’s perhaps, at its youngest. Or somewhere around or before there. Then there was a 280 sp and dp up to somewhere around the years after mid 80’s. Late 80’s saw the 290 and 290dp models. There were many of these for years after, under that “290” umbrella name.
Just in case that helps things.

Assuming the legs have not been rebuilt, have you checked for water in the gearbox(s).
Now is the time to check before relaunch.
Easy to do.
Loosen stainless filler/ oil level plug on top of outdrive to allow air in .
Carefully loosen stainless bottom drain plug and allow a small amount of gear oil to drain into container.
Bit messy sometimes, need to see sparkly clear oil.

Any trace of milkyness means water has got in.
If the props were damaged due to grounding the problem might be with a shaft seals.
Another way water can get in is via the gear selector seal.
Only 5 mins to check.

She is a 1975 Marine Projects Pilgrim 25,

so suspect originally came with AQ270 Volvo Penta petrols and matching out drives. Engines are now 2 x Perkins 4108 still matched to what I believe are the original out drives??

Drained and swapped the oil when I went to Chatham to Antifoul her and was nearly as clean as when it was put in, but good advise and thanks for taking the time to reply

There is a large washer with tabs on it. The cone should have lots of recesses at the back to bend the tab washer bots up in toView attachment 170169
Thanks for that, I remember seeing them when I was changing the Anodes, the previous owner did me a great favour removing and sending off the props but hate putting things back after it's been removed by another person, think it stems from when I rebuilt my cousins Suzuki GT750 engine after his mate had taken it apart lol. Just need to get some time off work and get over to put the props and new Transducer on

Ah...got you. Lovely boats these. Think I remember you posting about her previously. Yeah she will be 270 drives, you're right enough. They usually came with twin 4 cylinder petrol engines.

She was called Barnacle Goose Chase, and fitted with Volvo AQ130 B20 engines.😀

She is a credit to her past owner,he had her for 10 years and did lots of upgrades. Took us an age to sort getting her moved from Chatham Marina to Cardiff Marina, just need to refit her props and was going to install the new Garmin 923xse GPS Maps plotter and just change both engine oils and filters then we can finally get to try her out
