A mate is looking to buy a 14ft dory and it has an old Penta outboard on the back. It's in working order but a bit scruffy, he doesn't need the motor as he's got a newish Yam 4-stroke.

Is there a market for classic outboards of this size or better breaking it for spares as there are hardly any bits available today?

I had a 5hp Penta Outboard. I had it for about 10 years thinking it was valuable.
Then I put it on Ebay and found that it wasn't valuable at all.
Eventually I sold it for £50.
Some of these were actually quite good as they had a charging circuit and would charge a 12 v battery which is why a lot were sold to Canal Boat owners.
If its working you could go for £100 but I tried getting a set of points and they are unobtainable.

Although in hindsight, the Volvo Penta I had was made by Crescent and was Air Cooled. But if your 50hp Outboard is water cooled they may have bought another manufacturers engine, and re-badged it it may be worth taking a photo and sending it to Evinrude, Mercury dealers. When Bill Higham was at Worsley he had loads of old outboards and would have recognised the engine or known if it was a re-badged engine and who from.
( I always remember buying a new Lotus Elan and the back axle casing split and found out that the back axle was from a Triumph Herald, so using other firms parts has been around a long time)

VP, Crescent and Selva were all brands of outboards owned by Electrolux I think; no idea who actually made the outboards though.
As Selva are still going perhaps a Selva dealer could be asked if they did a 50hp outboard and is it like the one which is mentioned on this forum.
