Is there a simple way to visually identify the different versions of this engine externally.
The problem.
New club member has a Princess 33 MkII (1981) flybridge with a pair of 41 ? diesels on shafts.
He can only achieve around 15 knots (ish) with a perfectly clean recently anti fouled bottom.
When he bought boat he was pretty convinced it was sold as having a set of 200HP engines.
All web research (Princess Heritage Website) states biggest engines were 165HP.

Another club member had an similar boat which was fitted with 165 HP engines and could easily get 17/18 knots.

Clues.
Both engines will rev to 3600 at high idle.
One engine will achieve 2600 at WOT.One engine will achieve 3600 at WOT,both under power flat out.
Suspect the 2600 RPM engine is doing all the work ?.
Both engines have the little anti smoke device but one has obviously been disabled..
His engines look externally the same as my 41B except for anti smoke gismo.

Any comments and observations most welcome.
Has he "A" or "B" series engines and are they 165 HP or 200HP.
Can a non functioning cold start device be the reason for any loss of power ?

For info, the Volvo Penta TAMD41A, (200Hp), engine was introduced to the world in spring 1986, and was the first generation of direct injection engine succeeding the TAMD40B/C, (135/165Hp), which although the same cylinder block was indirect injection, with combustion chambers in the cylinder head rather than moulded in the crown of the piston.
If the engines in this Princess are originals they cannot be the TAMD41, and they are therefore NOT 200Hp.
Hope this helps.

Confirms my suspicions.
Will however have a look at the engine ID plates .
