Club members boat giving puffs of intense black smoke when opening/shutting throttles.
On recent offshore run transom was covered in black soot deposit.
Recently purchased boat.
Appears to run fine otherwise.

Seem to recall a post regards fuel limiter ??? on top of diesel injector pump,which could cause exactly this, if mal-adjusted or fiddled with...
 
Had the same problem on mine turned out to be the aftermarket air filters I was using changed to Volvo ones instently better .
 
All the usual long hanging fruit of air/primery/secondary fuel filters etc have been swapped out.
Just a real intense short pulse of dense black smoke as throttles opened bfrom idle which quickly clears
When running under load at constant revs...clear as a bell.
 
Sudden high demand and no turbo boost? happens every time, even on a road vehicle, all clear when the turbo catches up. there was/is? a gizmo that is/was fitted to simms?cav in line pumps, did not make a lot of difference, Jif will get the soot off! LOL
