I have a volvo penta 4.3gl inboard petrol engine 1998 that keeps trying to stall when first started, you have to keep reving the engine to stop it from stalling, after a couple of minuites it ticks over perfectly . I have had the auto choke housing off and everything moves freely and i have cleaned the flame arrestor and this has made no difference. It is on a trailered boat and i have always driven my boats of the trailer but am unable to do this with this boat because as soon as you bring the throtle down to the neutral position the engine stalls.
Any advice greatfully recieved
Andrew

Sounds like a blockage of sorts in the jets or venturies that feed the engine only during the choke on cycle!?

Wip the carb off and give everything a good cleaning with a tin of aerosol carb cleaner from Halfrauds!

(be carefull though as it naughty stuff)

I would look at:-
1) Blocked jets in the carb
2) Tickover too slow
3) Ignition timing
4) Crank pully timing
5) Spark plugs
6) Crack in distributor housing

Then I'd start to panic and hope someone with a LOT more knowledge than me comes along!

You sure this isn't normal. My previous carb V6 and V8 were the same, had to set throttle at fast idle for a couple of minutes to prevent stalling then OK. I fitted a manual choke override on the V8 which allowed me to open the choke sooner, sometimes almost straight away and this shortened the time to wait considerably.

Welcome to the forum and I note that you have also posted this on other not so high quality forums. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Having dealt with old bangers in my yoof, I would check carb jets and timing, although ontheplane mentions a classic problem, which is a crack or damp in the distributor housing. First of all, I would take cap off on a dry day and let it dry out if it has been stored over the winter.

HI I have exactly the same problem with a 1988 VP V6
I set the throttle stop screw so it ticks over on about 1000rpm, after it all warms up (can be as long as 10 mins) I turn it back to 700rpm, after riding around for a bit it will then tick over at this setting.
My carb has been overhauled but not sure if all the settings are correct. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The longest I leave my boat is 2-3 weeks, if I start the engine the next day it seems a lot better!
Apart from that minor hic-up she runs like a dream,

Seems the general concensus from others and other web sites that they just need warming up b4 they run well but i will certainly give the carb a good blow through and check out the dist cap.

Not a problem

It needs to warm up first. If you don't have any other problems, just let it burble away for a few minutes before you try to engage gear.

Keep it on warps for a few minutes, then engage forward, then reverse, if it goes, then you are set to let loose. If it stalls, run it a bit longer, and do same test again.

On my boat, I just turn the engine on while I'm loading things on. By the time I've got the cover off, and stuff loaded, it's ready to go, usually. The forward and reverse shows if it's ready. If it stalls, it's not heated enough, and needs more time

I would agree with the others, I think most of us have forgot what carbs are like, as we are all used to perfect running EFi car engines. Boat engines are so old technology. On my last 2 petrol engined boats I always let the engine warm up for couple of minutes before casting off, a stall was always a risk.

Might be worth a check of the themostat too, on my Volvo 4.3 carb it was an electric choke, if the thermostat wasn't quite closing properly or opening too early then the engine took ages to warm up but the choke de-choked in any case leading to slow running problems.

As others have said though, as these engines run cool in any case they must be thoroughly warm to be reliable shifting into gear.

Has it always done this since you've had it or was it better behaved previously???
