Volvo Penta 4.3 GS Ignition Timing?

Over the weekend the engine has been coughing and spluttering a bit especially when starting from cold.
On investigating the problem I found that one of the terminals had broken off the auto choke.
So hopefully I can cure the problem, however while doing this and a general service, I want to check the timing.
My only problem is, the manual I downloaded says "Authorised Dealer Service Only".

My questions are :-

Is the timing likely to "slip"?

Why is it not published?

I have a Clymer manual for an older GM, V6, volvo AQ series etc. that states the timing at 8 degrees BTDC.
Is this going to be the same?

On my Mercruiser 4.3 EFI you have to put the engine in "base timing mode" before you can set the timing. You need a special mercruiser tool (or a paperclip) to do this.

I'm guessing its something similar on your Volvo, but Volvo want you to pay a Volvo mechanic to insert the paperclip.

Last week I attended a 4.3 gl, he had used 3 car mechanics to try and start the engine, all it was down to was a dirty distributor cap!, so id try that first.

I'm convinced though that the rough starting is down to the terminal being off the auto choke.

I will however have a clean around and in the distributor cap as well.

If you read this Paul you may be able to help with my next posting if you wouldn't mind having a look. It's about getting hot water to my calorifier.
