volvo penta 290 out drive exhaust

Watching one of my outdrives yesterday with the engine running I have exhaust gases blowing up around the bonnet of the drive with some exhaust blowing out of the leg itself in the usual fashion, making me suspect the exhaust bellows is holed or partially detached, obviously that means a lift out to fix, but can it wait till the end of the season or will harm be done???

Exhast gas leaking from a petrol engine is potentailly fatal!

not in this case its exiting the water 300 mm away from where I think it should!!

I believe that you may be able to change the exhaust below without removing the leg so a lot depends on being able to do it without lifting the boat by drying out suitablely
