Hey folks could do with a little help. Long story short this has been on land for 5 years. The outdrive is very stiff with the steering cable disconnected. I’ve been spraying freeing agent on it for about a month and it’s starting to move easier is this a common issue?

If it's been standing for 5 years it will need to be taken apart and serviced. Various pin and bushes will likely need rerplacing and you should definitely replace the water hose and exhaust bellows.

A glass half empty view .
.Do everything now while the boat is out of the water.
Its no fun having to lift the boat again a few short weeks later cos you skipped something.
Lurking (and well hidden) in there, as well as all the other little rubber bits and bobs are a couple of little plastic top hats on the steering fork.
Spent five mins finding out what and where they are................... and they are the very least of your worries. :)
Loads of advice on here on how to keep the costs down with non VP parts.
First job ?.
Drain the gearbox oil, it could determine the course and cost of your rebuild .
No point in wasting money on something that is beyond saving.
A glass half full.
Lots of fun in your boat.

Some great advice, I’ve got a Shetland Kestrel that I’ll be selling next year so this one will go in next year. I will be doing everything whilst it’s out the water and taking as much advice from this group so thank you very much

I think there are grease points on the steering , firstly its probably old grease gone hard, maybe a heat gun would free things up>

You may need eyes on stalks , arms with 3 joints and knuckles of pure Kevlar to do anything about greasing while outdrive is on boat.
Unless the umpteen very careful and conscientious previous owners of your outdrive have been zealots ( yea right) about greasing the steering shaft via this nipple, the grease inside will have degraded to the consistancy of concrete and no amount of pressure from any grease gun will shift it.
Remove nipple ( whole new circle of hell) and try to shift old grease inside steering fork with bit of wire.
Much easier done with steering fork on the bench.
Nipple is on top of fork and you can see the two grooves where the grease is supposed :) to lubricate the fork shaft.

Does your outdrive use the "Hoover Motor" to lift the outdrive or is it hydraulic. ?

or you can modify it and extend it for easier accessR6 line connected via banjo, finishes near my batteries

p.s. if it is not greased on a regular basis it will start to leak and the seal on the outside will wear, i have the T shirt for that one

While my sterndrives were out I had extensions added. Much, much cheaper than having to pull the legs off again!
