Hi my boat has a 270 penta out drive and I am having trouble with the reverse lock took the boat out cleaned it all looks ok changed the springs put it back in water still jumping up in reverse my gear cable is very stiff could that be the problem any advice much appreciated and is there any way of testing the lock mechanism on land as I don't want to keep lifting it out thank You

That wiĺl not prove the lock mechanism is working.
you need to check that the pawls are fully engaged in the locking bar and try to manually pull the leg up when reverse is selected. Ispect locking bar for wear

Also make sure the device is free of barnicules and that ALL the springs are present otherwise it will not latch down.
The stainless springs on my 280 T fractured and fell off.
Not sure if 270 has same system of holding down leg going astern while still being able to release on serious ahead shock impact.
You can just buy a spring kit , not the entire mechanism which cost a fortune.

Hi
If it’s anything like the 290, the latch and lock mechanism is known to wear. It will need a new catch.
In the meantime, usually if it’s not too bad, if you steer the leg over to one side and engage reverse, it will often lock. Just usually in a straight position it slips.

Changed gear cable it changes gear much easier now I have checked the lock mechanism is it supposed to be permanently locked until you operate the power tilt as when it is down i can't lift it

In forward it will lift. In reverse it should lock.
If you have in reverse and try and lift it will be obvious where the catch lock I refer to is. Even more so if you have someone put in forward...you lift it then have the helper put in reverse while you hold it up...then slowly lower it and look in to see it lock on way down. You’ll hear it too. This is independent of the power trim if anything like the 290 I’m using as a reference

The out drive locks down .when I lift the out drive up by the lift motor it unlocks and raises does that mean it is locked in reverse

Should be, but you can only tell by tugging hard on it (if on the hard) or by engaging reverse if in the water.
Incidentally, if it does keep kicking up, the shock quickly destroys the universal joint which then very quickly destroys the gearbox.
If this does happen, I can thoroughly recommend IVSS in Sandwich, Kent. They were offering recon units for around £700.00 and (if you're close enough) may be able to help with the reverse lock if you're still having issues.
Good luck.

The workshop manual gives the adjustment process for the astern latch
The lock is released by the lift engaging

Marineparts Europe site has a VP parts catalogue if you look in gasoline engines Aq115 transmission 270 intermediate you should see the exploded view sorry can’t do link

Hi i had this prob when i had a Princess 32 it was a pain all the 12 years i had the boat. I changed the springs the catches adjusted it many times. Out of the water i would get it working back in it would be ok for a few weeks then the B would kick up just when i needed it .I was told they were always a pain even when new.I have changed my boat for a shaft driven one .If you do find a way to stop it please post it as there must be a lot of people out there still pulling there hair out over this.

Thats easy..... the cheapest way in the long run, also one which ensures you spend your days boating and not fixing...... sell the boat with outdrives and buy one with .....err umm...trying to think what they are called..

I have learnt something from this thread. That is, that old gits hatred of outdrives stems from owning an ancient 280. I can sort of understand, and feel I can now cut the old boy some slack. I Wouldn't want to own a modern Ford Focus if I thought it was still the same as my MK1 escort ;)
