My engine is giving out black smoke and what looks like carbon deposits above 1600rpm. Power is severely reduced and I can,t get more than 1900rpm. Any clues would be welcome
Have you checked out the exhaust? The flexible exhaust delaminates over time and the 'blockage' restricts the flow of
exhaust gases which in turn limits the revs/unburnt fuel/sooty water.
Just unbolt the elbow and remove it from the boat, stand it between blocks and add some degreaser, leave for 30 minutes then attach with a screwdriver and scraper, repeat if required.
Not expensive and not too difficult, best done each time you haul out if you run the engine a lot and at less then required rev's.
I had a heating problem on my MD2030 and found the exhaust outlet was heavily blocked with soot/tar which would have been affecting performance. I replaced the exhaust outlet, but still had the heating problem which I eventually traced to a blockage in the syphon breaker on the outlet from the raw water pump. When I cleaned the blockage the water flow increased 4 fold, and no more overheating.
The exhaust outlet off the engine certainly was blocked up though.
