referrring to a VP 2030

Your engine is what Perkins calls a 103-10. Perkins started importing these 100 series engines from a Japanese company called Ishikawajima Shibaura Machinery, Ltd. nearly twenty years ago. ISM is part of Ishikawajima Harima Industries, one of Japan’s largest industrial companies. Perkins marketed this engine in a marinized version as the Perama M30. They sold the engine to Volvo Penta who marketed it as their MD2030. They also sold the engine to Massey Ferguson, McCormick, Terramite, Textron, Jacobsen, Cushman, Vermeer, Leech Lewis, JCB, Kobelco, and Northern Lights to name just a few. In the US, the engine was distributed thru Detroit Diesel – Allison which is closely tied to the MTU conglomerate. By 1996, Perkins had become so successful at marketing these engines to other equipment manufacturers that they formed a joint venture with ISM called Perkins Shibaura Engines, Ltd. and began assembling the engines at the Perkins facility in Peterborough, UK from parts shipped from Japan. In 1997, Perkins was acquired by Caterpillar. With an added boost from Caterpillar, this little engine has become one of the most popular engines in the world. It’s used in turf equipment, tractors, mini-excavators, brush choppers, compressors, welders, pumps, generators, etc. etc. etc. Even Caterpillar uses it in some of their smaller equipment. The “Perkins” name was highlighted on the engine ID plate which is located on a distinctive boss just forward of the injection pump. The 2006 model year’s production of the engine has “Shibaura” highlighted on the ID plate. In 2001, the larger Shibaura 400 series engine was introduced with assembling at Peterborough, UK from parts mostly from Japan, and in June, 2004 assembling of the 400 series engine began at a Caterpillar facility in Griffin, Georgia, USA with production exceeding 100,000 units per year.

Perkins’ current part number for the oil filter is 140517050 and sells here in Kent, WA at Perkins Pacific for $6.85. At least that was the price a couple of months ago. All the earlier Perkins oil filter part numbers for this series of engine have superseded to this number. And all the engines in this series (two, three, and four cylinder 100 series) are supposed to take the same filter. I believe that Volvo’s part number is or was 834337. The filter should be readily available from any of the other equipment manufacturer’s using the engine including Caterpillar, and from many of the major filter manufacturers.

Oil Filter = Fleetguard LF3826 or LF3376, Wix 51335, Fram PH3512, NAPA FIL1335.
Diesel Filter = Fleetguard LF5114, Wix 33386, Fram P3627, NAPA FIL3386, Volvo 861477-8?.

Useful information exactly.
However I wonder if you or anyone knows the origin of the earlier VP2000 range, specifically the 2003 unit?.

A cross reference for filters and replaceable parts would be most useful.

I used to buy an equivalent FRAM filter for my 2030 and had no problems but when I bought a new boat with a 2040 engine found Volvo had a longer filter and practically impossible to get an equivalent cross referrenced filter. I believe this filter was then supplied for the 2030 as well in the UK.

I would not believe Volvo would do this to ensure sales of their filter at inflated prices and I am sure there is a serious technical reason.

By the way using only genuine Volvo parts my 2040 seized at just over 500 hrs!!

I tried this site, putting in my VP2002. The proposed equivalent fuel filter looks right, but the proposed oil filter is much too big - more like a car one for size. The text shows them as replacing VP parts 8299133 and 8343378 respectively. Unfortunately the note I thought I'd carefully kept of my filter part numbers seems to have gone astray, and the boat's a bit far away...

Size is not everything! The important bits are the screw thread and gasket diameter. I like to cross-reference my cross-references and this site is quite good too : http://catalog.baldwinfilter.com/
LSUK do Baldwin filters, and for my VP2020 the Baldwin eqivalent is quite a lot smaller than the 'original' VP part.
So long as the equivalent you can get will physically fit, I would not be concerned about it.

I think that the part numbers quoted in this post may be incorrect for the 2030.
the numbers and equivilents as I understand it are:
oil filter
volvo 3581621
fram PH2951
coopers Z525

fuel filter
volvo 861477
fram P4178

these are what I have used, I originally got the fram numbers by phoning Fram Filters directly to get their equivilents of the Volvo part numbers.

I tried car suppliers to get filters cross referenced but most of them only give you the cheapest equivalent that they have in stock I found this website which seems to have most Volvo Penta Filters and their equivalent and they were cheaper than Auto factors.

www volvopentaspares com www.volvopentaspares.com

The guy I spoke too there in Southampton, seemed really helpful and knowledgeable and he said if they haven't got it on the website yet then they can probably source it.

The 2000 range are unique to Volvo - their own design and manufacture - and only used in the marine applications, although of course filters, belts and waterpumps are proprietary items so you should be able to equivalents. However, the difference in price, unless you are a big user with many engines or do large number of hours is hardly worth it usually. There are no other sources for most of the Volvo unique parts.

I pretty much agree with the above list. Here's a few more:

1st Fuel
Fram C1191PL, Mahle KX23, Unipart UGCGFE5370

2nd Fuel
Fram P4178A, Mahle ADN12309

The water pump impeller has also changed it's p/n in recent times. It was 3586497 and has been replaced by 3593659.

Other parts worthy of change at, say 5 year intervals (my choice) are Air Filter 3580509 and Drive Belt 966901. I generally buy through Keypart Ltd and have no relationship, just a satisfied customer.

According to a VP dealer the larger filters have been superseded by the small ones.

The smaller ones have the advantage that they dump less oil in the bilge when you change them.

the latest vp number is that but i did the check and the older number was 861474.

It is also available as a "Sierra" fuel filter # 18-8126. I was given one erroneously for my MD22 (Perkins Prima) last year but I will be handing it over to a friend (when he gets back from the Aegean) because his boat has a 2030. This is stated on the box to be the equivalent of the VP 861477-8
