When I activate the instrument panel (just before starting the engine) by pressing 'Power ON/OFF' switch on the Volvo Penta 2030 of my Beneteau Oceanis 361, a fan begins to operate that NEVER stops when the engine is running until you actually stop the engine and press again the switch. Is this normal?
PS: By the way it has the panel without the ignition switch.

There is no fan on my 2030, so guess it could be an engine room extractor, which should be easy to identify as it will be connected to trunking and an outlet. If it is original it should be covered in the owners manual, but it may have been fitted after build.

The fan is basically a blower that gets the hot air out of the engine room. It was installed by the factory. The main question is why it never stops.

[/ QUOTE ] Maybe because it is wired up so that it starts when you press the switch and keeps running until you stop it again. When do you expect it to stop?

It may originally have had a timer on it. This is common, for example in petrol engined sportboats where the extractor runs for a while before you start the engine to clear fumes and then runs for a fixed time afterwards.

From what I remember of a 361, the engine bay is rather tight on space so guess the fan could be set up to run continuously to keep a flow af air to the engine.

That is what it is supposed to do, it runs continuously, it is a bene thing, not VP, the fuse for it is in the steering binnacle, on my 351 the fuse corroded, i found it by accident, it gets very annoying, drumming away, i fitted a switch so that when it gets on my tit i switch it off. it dosent do any harm to not run it, mine was not working for 2 years!!

On my 36 it appears to run continuosly. It certainly runs when the ignition is turned on. And it's running when the engine has been stopped ( but the ignition is still on). If it runs in between times, I couldn't say. The engine noise masks it!

My Dufour 36 has a continuous running bilge blower.Because of all the soundproofing and as we often motor for 20 hours on a voyage, (contrary or no wind) it is necessary to avoid too high a temperature in the engine bay. What was not clear was where the in-line fuse was located and this was eventually found tucked away beside the exhaust water upside down U fitting whose proper name I cannot now recall!Anyway it was behind an un-labelled panel so now its presence is writ large upon the outside of said panel! So much for manuals! The blower gave up the ghost, blowing said fuse, leading to the goose chase or should that read "ghost-chase"to find where all the supply power had got to! Smelly motor as it died did not help skip's peace of mind! Now replaced, all is serene and quieter too!Happy St. Patrick's Day to all, no snakes here, only human kind sometimes! Were there ever any snakes in Ireland???
