Ok. I'm all new to this....
When reading about a cold start, it says reset the throttle to about half. I've tried this and note the prop shaft is still engaged. Is this normal?
How do I put the gearbox into neutral with a single side mounted lever?

No, not normal. Shaft should not turn when starting. On mine you sort of pull the lever arm out about 1/4"when its vertical( neutral),to engage gear you have it vertical and small depress. Yours may be different

I just went out to the boat and pulled and prodded the throttle, but nothing.
BUT, by pushing the lever IN, it disengaged the gear linkage.
