I've tried turning my VP 2003T over using the manual crank handle, but although it fits on the engine, it doesn't 'engage' with anything, so just turns freely. Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm wondering whether I'm missing a part to go between the handle and the engine, but I've checked the Owner's Manual and Workshop Manual and can't see anything obvious.

It should engage with a pin through the end of the camshaft.

for example part 15 in the diagram below although there is some variation between versions.
I assume screw 15a holds the pin in position
Plug 15b should be fitted in the hole where the handle goes on engines which are not equipped for hand starting

Years ago, we had a single cylinder Sabb diesel - about 9 HP. It was equipped with a ginormous flywheel, and we could JUST start that by hand by getting the flywheel spinning fast with the decompressor on, and then turning the decompressor lever. Whoever got the engine turning fast enough would be blowing hard afterwards!

I've got a Volvo 2003. A 3 cylinder, 28 HP diesel with no substantial flywheel to store rotational energy would be on a hiding to nothing for manual starting. The only thing I can see the crank handle being useful for would be to turn the engine over while adjusting tappets - and a socket on the shaft does just as well for that.

By the way, we have the plug 15b that VicS refers to - it is usually found in the bilge under the engine, as it isn't a particularly tight fit!

Finally, have you seen what Volvo charge for a crank handle? I don't have one and have considered buying one - until I saw the price! I've just looked again, and they seem to be out of stock and no longer in production, so you may have a rare animal.

Our VP2002 had a pin that projected equally on both sides of the end of the camshaft. Unfurtunately it sheared off and I've been unable to remove the remaining bit. I've tried the usual penetrating fluid followed by a hammer and punch but you need to be careful not to break off the end of the camshaft. I'm told that there is a special Volvo tool for the job and that a roll pin of the correct size makes a good replacement.

Thank you all! Once again some really useful information from this great forum, I'll see whether I can make myself a '15' pin. VicS, where did that image come from? I don't see it in the manuals I have.

AntarcticPilot, I got mine for £ 60 from D B Marine, not sure whether they still have them in stock though.

Parts list at http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-spare-parts.aspx

Earlier versions may have had a " spring pin", but you'll see them on the diagrams..... possibly if originally fitted with one there would not be a threaded hole for the screw in the end of the shaft...??

That's the sort of price I thought it was - maybe a bit cheaper. But £60 for a simple handle seems well and truly OTT!

My VP too is missing the '15' pin, so thanks for all the valuable info.

BTW aussi, is your VP fitted with the decompression lever at the rocker cover, as I'm aware that some aren't, thus making hand cranking near impossible?

Mine is, but I still doubt I could start it by hand-cranking. The Volvo 2003 doesn't have a large flywheel, and I don't think there is enough momentum stored up to allow it to turn over the necessary few times once the lever is closed. The only thing that allowed it to work with the old Sabb was the enormous flywheel, and that was 50/50 whether it would work on any particular try!

tool for removing/inserting crank pin..

Just made this to remove my broken pin, it's a copy of the volvo one, don't know if it works yet.If it does I will gladly make it available to forumites for postage.

Awesome. I'll check whether a broken or missing pin is the problem on mine next time I'm on the boat, so may well take you up on that! You could start a new forum feature - the "Tool Pool"…

… though that could be misconstrued.

I used to hand-start my VP 2002 without much difficulty and used to practice it fairly regularly. I would imagine the 2003 would be quite a bit harder.

I have a 2003 with hand crank. The decompressor allows decompressing 1 or 2 cylinders; I suppose decompressing 2 might allow turning it over, though it must be rough when it starts.

The problem in my installation (Westerly Falcon) is that the structure of the engine compartment stops the crank handle after 3/4 of a revolution!

I got the Volvo 2002 same problem.... Miss a part! You can buy original missing part for 2 pound. Check in the Volvo website and you will find the small steel piece to insert in the hole.
Cheers
