Volvo Penta 2002 Replacement Air Filter.

The air filter / inlet silencer on my old 2002 is giving up the ghost. The mesh gauze inside is cracked and the unit can't be dismantled so any sort of repair is very difficult. The local dealer tells me that this part is no longer made and suggests that I install a K&N or similar filter. The old unit just clamps onto a stub tube projecting from the cylinder head so measuring the tube diameter and other physical dimensions is easy. But what else do I need to know to specify the new filter correctly?

Anybody else done this?
 
The original filter is a very crude arrangement, and would only stop big bits entering the engine. Even if it's now on its last legs I can't see that it'll be performing any worse than it ever did. And, unless you're doing lots of sanding, engine compartments are fairly clean places. I'd leave it alone.
 
On my 2003,which I assume has the same type of plastic housing with a sort of sponge inside, the innards got really nasty and basically fell to bits so the engineer here said ,rather than pay exorbitant Volvo replacement parts,just forget the air filter and that's been the position for the past couple of years or so. I did seek advice from the forum at the time and general opinion seemed to agree with what the engineer said.I remember there was also a suggestion to get some of the foam that's used for custom filters on speedway bikes and the like, could be a good idea.

Different beast. The 2002 has a metal canister filter with a coarse metal gauze inside. It's actually described as an "air silencer" rather than a filter.

+1 - see attached photos. The original is stamped with 'MANN' and part number 41 021 87 211

I have been following posts about this subject for a couple of years - I've noticed that no one has suggested a suitable (all metal) replacement silencer (my 2003 engine is significantly noisier without the silencer). It may be defined as a silencer, but it provides crude filtration - needed in my case because the ageing anechoic material is beginning to drop off in the engine bay.

I suggest very, very thorough and regular cleaning with diesel is all that is needed (see earlier posts).

Hi Bob,

I'm pretty sure my penta 2002 air filter/silencer is well over-due for a good clean too. Any advice or links to other posts would be much appreciated if you have some experience with this.

All that is needed is a good long soak in diesel and a blow through (provided it is not 'breaking up').

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your advice, I soaked mine overnight in Diesel and there was quite a lot of crap that came out of it. Then I soaked in diluted vinegar for 3 hours and even more came out. I would attach the picture of what came out after the vinegar soak but cant figure out how to attach a picture :)

Anyway after drying it out in the strong Singapore sun I refitted the filter and its a lot better. I can see how further cleaning would be more beneficial too and a regular clean a very good idea.

So for my air filter on my Penta 2002 I'd never cleaned it for 13 years and saw black smoke at high revs, so after reading this post and was inspired to give it a good clean. Here's what I did ........

1. Removed the air filter / silencer
2. soaked in diesel overnight and rinsed out (was amazed at what came out)
3. soaked in white vinegar for 3 hours (and again amazed at what came out)
4. soaked in white vinegar again overnight and rinsed using fresh water hose
5. sprayed with WD40

I bodged mine with a plastic container that fitted the old one and several 30mm holes cut into it and some of these

Green to the outside as a coarse filter and yellow fine filter to the inside.

It worked perfectly and cost me an hour's pottering and a bit of grief from Madame when she couldn't find her sponges
