Good point Eddy. There were carbon deposits as described above TDC and on top of piston. Was careful to avoid any hydrochloric Acid there!

Thank you goes to Roddy of Roddy's garage in Oban who gave me a welding rod for a couple of quid into the charity bottle. I needed one of these to clean out a wee breather channel which goes through the head and into the air intake (the one which would get blocked if the rocker gasket were on upside-down).

This is what was causing your problem. Is there only one of these channels? What I have done on other small volvo engines is to introduce another breather and take the effluent to the air filter.

Just one breather channel on the 2001. No doubt on the 2002/2003 there may be a series of them? I can't really tell from the exploded schematic views of the head and rocker cover on the VP spares site.
