I have a volvo penta 2001 and am having a problem engaging gears. I checked the gearbox oil level and discovered that it was full of water. Has anybody got any suggestions as to my next course of action please?

[/ QUOTE ] Stop the water entering. presumably its raw water cooled so shut the seacock
Drain the box and flush it with some fresh oil in an attempt to save it from further damage if its not already to late.
Unless access is good to the rear of it I reckon you may have to remove the box to sort it out . But it should be possible to remove the oil cooler.
I am ssuming its an MS box but the drawings I have do not show the oil cooler in great detail.
Or are we talking about a "sail drive" in which case the above is mostly cobblers.
I hope it wasn't FULL of water - if so then where has the oil gone?
As Vic has said, the hose from the seacock goes onto one side of the gearbox and reconnects on the other side to a hose leading to the water pump. In the gearbox is an oil cooler (which I have never seen). This must have a leak in it.
You could speak to DB Marine as a potential customer and they'll probably tell you what's the likely scenario and cost. Very friendly people. http://www.dbmarine.co.uk/
