Volvo or Yanmar

Thanks to all for the above vitriol -- seriously. However, is there anyone out there who actually has a much-maligned Volvo MD2040 (which I may have to install on the underwriter's insistance) and who can give me a first-hand appreciation?
thanks

Yanmar 3 cly 35hp installed by me and found it to be excellent.
Current boat has a Bukh 36 3 cyl which is superb - they may be expensive but if you are keeping the boat for a while why not treat yourself.
These are the ONLY common engines designed from scratch for marine use.

Friend has new Volvo and has problems already

Best wishes

I have a Yanmar 3GM which I am very happy with with one exception, cold starting. It is a pig to start when cold. I have heard of this problem from a number of different sources and the standard answer that is given is that it is down to bent con rods. Hard to imagine as the engine is perfect once started once. All my experince with diesals both in boats and a number of cars is that glow plugs are essential. This engine doesn't have any but I understand that the new ones do.
