Volvo ocean race on TV

Volvo ocean race - weekly update.

There's also a weekly update on ITV4.
Runs every Saturday MORNING at about 02H30, and lasts about 40 mins.
This Saturday's covered the Melbourne in harbour race.

PS: no I don't stay up that late to watch it (that would be sad) - set the VCR.

Let's hope that the Australian coverage is better than the usual British media's effort.
You know the sort of thing where they find somebody who is proud to know nothing about boats to say " Ooh these boats are very big and expensive, and it is dangerous" [arty shot of bow wave]

Good program that, there should be more of it on TV.

It was interesting when they did the countdown of miles sailed in 24hrs records to see the difference in the yachts and the gear they were wearing from the 70's to the present day.

I would like to see a leg where all 7 can complete. I just get the feeling that these volvo 70s aren't quite built good enough - impressive nonetheless. Was once told, with a racing yacht, if nothing breaks then you built it too strong & heavy, and if things break you didn't quite build it strong enough. Hopefully they will have better luck as it progresses.

ING Brunel

ING Brunel, What's the point of missing out legs and rejoining the race?...surely the point of a race is to compete rather than satisfy sponsors?

What would happen if they took out the leader in one of the in-port races after missing 3 (?) legs? What are they hoping for? that the all 6 boats ahead of them break/combust/capsize on the homeward legs and having missed out the part from Aus to the US win by default?

Imagaine if that happened in round the cans racing?? Can't afford to race marks 3,4 and 5, so we'll cruise to mark 6 and rejoin the race
