We need more people to complain on the forum over there. The management are keeping a very low profile, time to badger them into a public response /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I think it is way to late to change their set up from a pay to win/make loads of money approach. Partly I understand why this has come about though.
The race organisers do not want to spend any of their budget on a game, despite it helping to keep people reading the marketing and following the real race. Running the games costs money so Ocean race want game for free = the game company has to charge to cover computer support bandwidth etc.
Volvo have not realised that they should pay for this along with the other sponsors, and design the race page to have a bit of marketing/offers etc.
They were offered sailonline with this concept but went for a game that I'm fairly certian didn't cost the organisers very much.
We even had people like Conrad Humphries fighting our corner, as he liked sailonline as a true tactical sailing game.
I have just noticed that there is now an option where you can buy all the options, plus repairs for all legs for a fixed price of £16.
Maybe they are listening to the detractors and this is their response. Seems a little better than the £80 I worked it out to be if purchased seperately
I have also joined that one - it's free which is great, however it is just a point and shoot type game - you get to choose the course you sail and leave it down to the invisible crew to do sail sets etc etc ... so it really a navigators game ....
running along nicely with ybwFireball (although it may just show up as Fireball as that is my login name) ...
OK I'll change my boat name it sounds like the new software may be running in 10-11 days which will allow you to search for other boats positions by typing in the first few characters.
I think it is more than point and shoot Fireball, they have even built in performance factors for tacking so as you tack the boat slows and accelerates, too many tacks looses speed. The wind data is far more detailed so you can gain wind angle and strength advantages by seeing where the wind fills in from. Also the boats speed varies by 0.1 of a degree so choosing your course or wind angle has a big effect in a long race.
I believe that you have to mail their Support. Your Username and Boatname are one and the same so they have to chnage your account. This was the case a year or so ago and I guess is still the process.
Right you lot ... they've opened up the groups a bit further....
