Assuming you have an RB gearbox the oil is the same as in the engine - so if the oil level in the sump of the engine is OK - so is the gearbox! As regards the gearbox leak I changed the seal in mine the other day but of course you have to disconnect the shaft. Have fun!

The MB2B gearbox comes in two different forms, known as the RB and the MS. The RB has a reduction ratio of 1.87:1 and the MS 1.91:1. Mine has the MS and is characterised by using a single lever throttle and gearchange (conventional). I have been told, but can't confirm from personal experience, that the RB uses two levers, one for throttle and one for gears.

As mentioned above, the RB gearbox shares the lubrication system with the main engine, so checking/changing the oil in the main engine does that as well. The MS has a separate filler plug on top of the gearbox - just below the water pump. This filler incorporates a dipstick for checking the level.

I can't help on the seal I'm afraid - I would imagine it depends to some extent on the amount of space you have round the engine.

THANKS FOR THE INFO MINE WAS A TWIN LEVER SO IT LOOKS LIKE IT IS THE TYPE OF GEARBOX THAT USES THE ENGINE OIL FOR LUBRICATION.
I CHANGED IT OVER TO SINGLE LEVER MORSE OPERATION LAST WEEK AND NOW HAVE A PROBLEM STOPPING THE ENGINE ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS.

if you have a rb gearbox then single lever control will not cope with the loads
the rb gearbox uses two different cables either morse 64c or teleflex ud617 both are heavy types with either 5/16 or 3/8 rod ends
single lever controls use 33c cable with 3/16 rod ends

ps upper case is considered SHOUTING

My gearbox seal is leaking as well. How do we change it. Does the gearbox have to come to bits or is it just a matter of pulling the old one off and then pushing the new one into place.
