I can see this item listed on the Volvo Penta parts list - £80! Anyone have any bright ideas where I can find one for less? The 'Do It Yourself' book is also £80! I want more than a diagram telling me where the air filter is. I have time, patience but not the budget for paying someone to sort my problems for me.

You should be able to find a free download on t'interweb. If you can't, I have a PDF of the Workshop Manual for the MD7A, which is ostensibly the same engine. If you'd like a copy, send me a conversation (private message) with your email address.

Are you planning much work on it - I just started to remove an MD7A from a restoration project - it’s not running. Trying to decide if it is worth trying to overhaul or just replace it. I suspect the main issue would be getting parts.

I'm no mechanic, just hoping to improve my know-how, so this just my very humble opinion... From what I've seen of these engines they are crude but tough. The cost of a new engine is considerable but at least will give you some reassurance. Looking at the overhaul option the main issues are spares & viability. If the crank and bores are ok then it is salvageable. Reading this forum appears to indicate that items that cannot be replaced can be reused. Set against the cost of a new engine, replacing items such as injectors with originals and using non OE parts elsewhere looks like a good plan.
For me a big factor would be; can I get the engine out to a place where I can work on it & then get it back in? I chuckled at the guide to something as basic as replacing the impeller in the Volvo manual - clearly the illustration shows an engine not in a boat. For work of this sort, personally I'd want to be doing it at the comfort of an engine stand.
