I am at the stage where the Volvo MD5A engine in my Pegasus 800 needs complete reconditioning or replacement.
Can anyone suggest a supplier of guaranteed reconditioned MD5A's (or B's) please?
Or . . . has anyone experience of replacing an MD5 with a modern diesel ? Needs to connect to the Volvo 110S saildrive.
Thanks any advice.

You could try talking to John Hawkins Marine in Chatham. They specialise in old Volvo stuff and have been nothing but helpful to me in repairing my MD7. I don't know whether they do reconditioned engines but they are worth asking. Phone number is 01634 840812.
Regards, Mudhook.

Many thanks.
I've tried them and, although they could not offer an engine, they could not have been more helpful - even though they were not going to be able to sell me anything !
Definately a phone number to put in the book.

Im looking to replace my MD5A (fitted to an S110 sail darive) as its underpowered for my yacht 28'.
Ive done some leg work already and found that there are two companies that do replacement engines with adapters to fit the S110 saildrive (sizes quite comparable).
These are Beta and Vetus, the latter being more info helpfull so far.
prices are about £2500 complete (10-11 HP)
So if you arnt in to much of a hurry i may have one for sale a cheep price in a few weeks, its in good condition and injectors just serviced. currently running in the NE (Hartlepool)

Thanks - could be interested.
I have arranged with the local Volvo Penta dealer to pull out the engine, strip it and report on what work is needed for a full recon.
If you could let me know if/when your engine is available, I should know the worst on mine by then.
Rob.

Placed the order for a shiney new Beta 13HP, mid week, so hopefully will be replacing in about 4 weeks.

Just serviced the MD5A and running lovely, PS will also have a prop spare 14x7".

I went through the same exercise only last year ( for my early pegasus 800). Both the Beta and Vetus units can be adapted to use the saildrive so if you are ok to spend around £3 to £4 k you can have a shiny new lump chugging away. I ended up spending around £750 having the vitals rebuilt and it now purrs along no smoke , quit, and a lot less hassle.
