If you take a good look at an MD22 you will see that the waterpump is different as well as the intake and exhaust and alternator mounting from the donor engine, which in this case is a Perkins Prima/Montego which was developed from a BL petrol engine. VP will have taken the base engine, cast/fabbed their own ancillary parts to suit and assembled the unit at their factory.Having been in the factory and watched a very Nordic young lady torqueing up the timing case with a pneumatic wrench is still a very strong image in my mind please accept that the md30 is an all Volvo engine and not a bought in unit
Likewise the MD20x0 series engines were developed form a small industrial range of engines, if you look at the bottom right hand side of the engine, you will see Perkins Japan, cast in to the block. Again the marinisation is carried out by VP and presumably assembled at their factory. The Pug engine, with the alloy head was used in the 80s? and as another poster has pointed out was designated the MD31.
So you may have seen blondes with torque wrenches screwing together engines in the factory, BUT in all probability they were assembling units from bought in base engines! The trick is to find out which volume manufacturer made the base unit and THEN you can source spare parts a lot cheaper!
