Volvo MD2B Alternators

I have an old (1972 vintage) MD2B fitted with a SEV Marchal 14/30A alternator which does not provide sufficient power for my needs. Volvo are asking approx. £300 for an upgraded alternator which is the Valeo A13N234 which has an output of approx. 60Amp. Has anyone found a suitable vehicle alternator that will fit the existing casting supplied by Volvo or alternately has any details of an alternative bracket that would allow a different type of alternator to be fitted. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I had an MD2b with Lucas alternator of about 60 amps. Not sure what it was from as I didn't fit it but it could have been from several british made cars in the '70s or '80s. It was fitted using 2 very simple flat steel strips about 6mm thickness with holes in each end to extend down from the standard casting about 50mm. I think the slotted adjuster had been cut and welded back at an angle. Unless someone gives you exact advice I should visit a local scrap yard and look for one thats about right. Important thing is to make sure the belt lines up perfectly.

I had a similar problem just last season. The latest Lucas, rated at 60 amps was fitted. These things dont cost the earth, so drive past the scrapyard and see an auto electrician who knows what hes on about and will explain. If you are upfront and confess to not being an expert!!
