Hi everyone - I have a Westerly with a Volvo MD22L conventional gearbox and shaft drive. Loosing water from the fresh water/coolant heat exchanger but no sign of leakage in the bilges or engine (ie oil emulsified) Looks like it could be the cooling stack. Does anyone know where I can get cheap parts for this engine as I think I may have to replace bits of the heat exchanger. Many thanks in advance.

Perkins do a full gasket set for about £100 for Prima M50, same engine. If you haven't positively located the coolant loss you could try replacing the manifold and exchanger gaskets - if it works, a lot cheaper than a new unit.

You are certainly correct about the expense. I still need to verify the cooling stack needs replacing. My issue is the boat is in Rochefort and I have to be sure any engineer is honest enough not to just go for a replacement rather than a repair. Also I was surprised that there was not a sacrificial anode on the heat exchanger although there is a bolt just forard of the refill screw top which could easily take an anode.
Any views on this. Also I know the cooling stack has never been taken out since new in 1996 and most probably could do with a good clean. I have a Volvo manual but it is not very clear how this is done.

Is this a heat exchanger with big rubber outlet / sleeves at each end and a few jubilee clips. If so are all the major sized jubilee clips tight as water can leak between salt and fresh water side on this type of heat exchanger when the clips are not tight.

If the stack has leaking tubes then these can be replaced at a radiator type workshop.

I think your engine will be earth isolated (except when stoppnig and using glowplugs) as is my Prima M50 and I understand an anode is not needed. At least I hope so. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
