I have just been for a test run in a vessel with a Volvo MD22L engine installation. On starting the engine what appears to be the oil pressure warning alarm stays on until the throttle is blipped. The owner says that he has been told by engineers that this is a “quirk” of this engine but can be fixed by a mod. Has anyone else experienced this?

The alarm is to let you know that you have low oil pressure could be a faulty sender are you willing to take that chance i wouldnt Jeffro

We had one and it didn't do that, but the alarm though noisy on test or on start up, rarely came back on straight away when the engine was stopped. We had an oil pressure guage on our panel too, though I believe Volvo only offered that as an extra on later ones. It does sound like it might be a sticky switch but it would be worth further investigation and perhaps a check by a Volvo engineer with an oil pressure guage before agreeing a purchase price.

Are you certain it was the oil pressure alarm, as a quirk of many Volvos is that the charging light doesn't go out unless you blip the the throttle, this is because the alternator doesn't wake up and start charging until the engine goes over 12-1500 rpm. then it will charge from idle. If it is the oil alarm, then get the sender checked out, and a the pressure checked with a manual oil pressure gauge.

This could well be the problem. I jumped to the conclusion that it was Oil pressure I forgot that the alarm also serves the Alternator.
