Has anyone had experience of re-engining from a VP 2040 (B) to the new VP D2-50?

The vessel is a 39' sailing boat with engine in a pretty standard location under the companionway steps with a sail drive. Space is tight, hence some of my queries.
I am interested to hear of any issues arising particularly on size and footprint differences as well as anything else you might think relevant.
As an optimist but realist I am hoping there aren't too many but not totally convinced!

Many thanks in advance,

I have the Volvo D2-40 in my heavy and old 36 foot Westerly Corsair. Based on my experience I would have thought that engine would be adequate for a 39 footer, what I don't know is if it is actually smaller than the D2-50

Yes, I did both engines on my cat last year. Things to note - you have to cut the frame because the D2-50 sump goes further a bit further forward than the 2040. Volvo have a cutting diagram somewhere on their site (look for the installation instructions for repowering with a D1/D2). I don't think the engine protrudes further forward than the 2040 but you should check that.
The bigger problems for me going to the D2-50 was the exhaust hose size goes up which means the silencer does too and that was a pain, The seawater hose also increases in diameter (and this may affect your strainer). Also the engine controls require 2 cables with chunky plugs which may take more routing than the 2040 guage cables (but that was not too bad for me
It was nice to do away with the 'pull stops' from the 2040, but despite having 2 brand new engines, one was supplied with an older MDI unit which failed at 6 hours *sigh*. So check the serial number of the MDI unit you get, as my engines showed no recalls pending, but the MDI box serial number was on the recall list. The new box has been fine so far.
Oh one other thing thats a shame - there's no oil pressure sender in the engine, just an alarm. If you want oil pressure, you'll need to tee that into the engine with the alarm, and then run separate cables for it.

Hi Rafiki,

Thank you for that. I understand that the D50 is a tad more powerful than the old one so I'm moderately happy it'll be OK form that point of view.

Hi Rick,

Many thanks for your experience with this. I am certeinly short of space so the sump issue needs more exploration, as with the exhaust and hose sizes.
