Volvo MD2030

Dont use ATF, if it looks like engine oil, then use the same.

How can you be sure the unit has the correct oil in at present ?

If all the VP manuals that I have found that refer to the MS10 give the oil as ATF why not use ATF?

Link to an official source that says engine oil ??

If his manual says engine oil, he inspects the oil and it looks like engine oil, errr, doesnt need much thought process to work out that perhaps that is what he should be putting back!
Going on to ATF, it is an oil developed for automatic transmissions, Automatic Transmission Fluid! It was developed because the clutch and brake bands in the box need a lube that can be squeezed out of the mating surfaces and yet be good enough to lube the gears without breaking down. In the MS2 gearboxes there arent brake/clutch bands similar to the ones used in AT boxes.
Bottom line, my MS2 box used to use engine oil, bottom line, VP then said use synthetic gear oil in the later MS2 boxes, bottom line VP put stickers on both these boxes referring to the correct oil to use, bottom line the OP took what looked like engine oil out, bottom line his manual says engine oil. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck?
By the way, why are you referring to an MS10? The thread is about VP2030s and MS2 series gearboxes, which is what I was posting about!

The thread has become bifurcated.

Original question was about an MD2030 with MS25S sail drive. ( not MS2 gearbox) No quibble there according to the lubrication chart http://www.volvopenta.com/SiteCollectionDocuments/Penta/Misc/drive_1_oil_rec_7745608.pdf that uses the same oil as the engine.

Also aware that MS2 uses or at least used engine oil. (Dunno why you dragged MS2 into the discussion)

However later in the thread markdj asks,
"There is a MD2030 with a MS10 reverse gearbox. Does anyone know the type of oil the MS10 gearbox takes?"

I replied,
"I could not find any reference to the MS10 gear box in connection with the MD2030
However manuals for other engines using the MS10 indicate that the oil is ATF (Dexron II, III). Capacity 0.35 litres"

Markdj later says,
"Many thanks for the replies. I sucked out the oil, looked very much like engine oil but I was unsure whether it could be 80/90 or 15/40. I think I'll go with the 15/40. This is out of a Beneteau sailing yacht with a volvo MD2030 and MS10L-A gearbox.

It seems impossible to find any specific information on the MS10, maybe I should change from the oil that was in it to ATF???"

You then, quoting the above, say,
"Dont use ATF, if it looks like engine oil, then use the same."
Hence my comment.

Agreed Engine oil for the MS25S but ATF for the MS10

Sorry if all this reading is too academic for you :D

Yawn yawn!

I put back engine oil as that's what came out. Thanks for all the comments, a good read :-) It's surprising that the ms10 seems to be a ghost on the internet, no specific information from VP.

There should be a page on VP's website for all the gearbox oils but the link to it does not work.

The gearboxes are covered by the various manuals of the engines to which they are normally fitted. Therein you will find the correct oil is ATF.

Why use the oil you think may be in there at present when you can use the correct oil.

PM sent with a link to the info.
