In my yacht is Volvo Penta MD2030 engine with sail drive MS25S.
In the engine manual the oil for the s drive is:
Oil grade CD, viscosity SAE 15W/40
Is it the same oil as for the engine or not ?

IIRC Volvo changed abour 2001 as our Dufour had the oil changed to synthetic on the predelivery service.

Again IIRC the shape/colour of the dipstick tells you what one to use.

I am not sure of the reason for the change but suspect Volvo had a change of mind and decided that a synthetic oil was better whether they also changed any internal materials to suit a synthetic oil I have no idea.

Make doubly sure you use the correct oil as if it goes wrong Volvo's after sales service have a habit of always denying any responsibility and if they have to they blame the salt in the sea!!

I have a 2030 with saildrive. A very expensive synthetic oil is used for the transmission, (it also has a peculiar smell). The engine oil is completely different.

My year 2000 2030 had the same instructions (to use engine oil in the gearbox). Fortunately I had no need to top up before my engineer showed that a synthetic was necessary. I think Volvo erred in not making sure instructions matched the changes.

Volvo Md 2030 saildrive

Mine was filled by agent as delivered with same oil as engine.
Trips in hot water (French Canals) meant oil overheated and emereged from breather (or somewhere) and made a mess.Sucking out some oil helped, but pampers were the order of the day. I spotted a plate or label on the drive which differed from the manual supplied with the boat. This label specified synthetic oil of a different type. Cost €66 to fill the leg with nicely labelled Volvo bottles, but now no more mess from hot oil around seal, in Med waters summers.Worth looking at leg itself for this indication?

Good sailing and boating to all.

Hi VicS

Thanks for that .pdf link,

The matter is settled for me now! 120SE is mine despite what the delivered manual says, so synthetic is the right stuff.Nice to be re-assured the seals are not in self destruct.

Your fund of knowledge is greatly appreciated!

2030 spares

any suggestions for online supplier of 2030 spares, eg hoses and air filter ?

I could not find any reference to the MS10 gear box in connection with the MD2030
However manuals for other engines using the MS10 indicate that the oil is ATF (Dexron II, III). Capacity 0.35 litres

Volvo changed their minds, originally the 2030 had engine oil in, then they changed it to synthetic gear oil. They put a sticker on the box as to what it should be. My 2030 in sonsy lass used engine oil, the same gear box on my md22 uses synthetic gear oil. there are/were stickers on the box saying which oil to use.

Many thanks for the replies. I sucked out the oil, looked very much like engine oil but I was unsure whether it could be 80/90 or 15/40. I think I'll go with the 15/40. This is out of a Beneteau sailing yacht with a volvo MD2030 and MS10L-A gearbox.

It seems impossible to find any specific information on the MS10, maybe I should change from the oil that was in it to ATF???

Dont use ATF, if it looks like engine oil, then use the same.
