im about to install new piston rings on an md2020, however im looking for clarification on the orientation of the second (scraper) ring, it has an inner step. I understand this usually points downwards but not 100% sure on this engine?
The manual i downloaded doesnt mention the rings on this model!
TIA

I think the manual I have looked at answers your question

Look at the diagram on page 36

Errr... that's the page I posted in post 2.

So it is
I'm glad you agree with me but if you had been a bit quicker it would have saved me the bother of looking it up and posting.

Your post probably contravenes copyright law. Mine doesn't because I only posted a link.

Or, on the other hand, if you'd have been a bit more aware, you'd have checked for new posts before posting!

If it's a bother, don't look it up, just answer the questions that you know the answers to.

If you have no useful contribution to make ... Button it

BTW I seem to remember you obbjecting to quote highlighted in red.... Stick to your own rules

And I dont need your permission or approval to post

It was useful, would save you time if you only answered the ones you know the answers to :encouragement:

No problem with red quoted text, it highlights the part that one is replying to in particular.

At my age awareness is a distant memry... at leat it would be if I could remeber anything :(

Yes, that post speaks volumes.

Cheeky so and so. You wait until you cant remember things....... Credit card PIN numbers are the first to go.. then you are left standing at the till trying hard not to enter the wrong number one more time and having your card frozen. ... Its happened! Restaurant last time :{

I'd go back to using cash if only I could remember the PIN number for the cash card!

Thanks for the input:eek:
So, the second ring appears to be chamfered at the top, not really obvious on a smaller screen, incongruous to the way they are commonly orientated?

If you click on the image in PVB's post, then twice more ( or whatever the equivalent to clicking is on your device) you get a really big image.

Dont forget to break one of the old rings for each width and use the sharp end to scrape the carbon out of the bottom of the lands.

That's pretty much how i've always done it Richard.

Interesting. It's been about 20 years since I replaced a set of rings but I'm sure that slid them down parallel to the piston using bits of thin cardboard as spaces to get them over the upper grooves. However, now I'm not so sure and I think I have spiralled them in as well. Time plays tricks on my ageing mind. :(

Richard

I've just replaced the rings on my MD2010 (same size pistons) and spiralling them in was quite easy, just be careful not to force anything. Make sure that the lower rings don't slip into the upper grooves on the way down as getting them out again is more awkward.
