hello i have a volvo md2010 and have been told my timing is off, i sent my high pressure injection pump to exchange for reconditioned unit and i fitted it and engine is up and running but when i put it in gear i am getting black smoke and the water is dark as well, then back in neutral the water is clear and revs freely, i have been told that there must have been a shim under the injection pump, does anyone know what size of shim do i need and where do i buy them i cannot find any, i have change the low pressure pump all hoses and all washers have also been replaced

The shim looks like a gasket that sits under the pump.

You'll need the workshop manual which will tell you the size shim for moving the timing by x amount. Any competent diesel injection shop should be able to supply the shims required. If you have no shims In there you will be likely too advanced.

Have you checked the pop pressures are in spec of the injectors?

You will find the instructions for fitting the injection pump in the workshop manual

Volspec may be able to supply the shims, called spacers iin the parts list.
Theyy come in 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0 5 mm thicknesses,

Did you have this fault on the old injection pump,a restricted exhaust elbow will give similar fault these engines are well known for it
I do not know as I bought the boat 6yrs ago and started to repair her,she is now fully restored and she looks amazing, the tank had water in the diesel as the boat was on the hard for 6ys before I bought her as the previous owner was very ill ,the engine was brand new in 2006 and has 250 hrs on it,I opened the injection pump 3yrs ago and found there was spots of rust inside, that is the reason I bought the reconditioned unit, when they sent me the unit they did not return my small screw for the diesel that was unused to go back to the tank at the top of the injection pump it so I temporary put s bolt in there and the engine ran no problem this was 2019,as I said I was working every weekend on her I used to run the engine for around an hour at a time every time around 1000 to 1500 revs in neutral, never in gear as the boat has never been out from the pontoon,5 weeks ago went out for her maiden voyage,we achieved 7.2 knots in 17knots of wind on the sails only, then brought her into pontoons on engine,2 weeks later went to start her,she would not start, the lift pump would not let me hand bleed the system,so bought a new pump, that was the same, so bought another, again would not work ,bought another from a different company and it then worked

As I am new into the volvo penta engine and I put the wrong bolt on top of the injection pump ,would I have coked the engi ne up with soot with unburned diesel,i intend to take the elbow of this friday and check if it is choked up before I look at the timing
